Place Branding & Communications

I’m a consultant and speaker specializing in place branding, destination strategy, and place marketing.

I work with cities, regions, and promotion agencies to help them understand what sets them apart, define how they want to be positioned, and turn their identity into a strategy that attracts visitors, investment, talent, and opportunities.

My work brings together place, identity, narrative, positioning, and promotion through a strategic lens.

How I Understand Destinations

A destination is more than a brand, a campaign, or a tourism product.

It is shaped by its identity, history, assets, people, institutions, reputation, and the experiences it creates.

That is why I approach place branding as a strategic process that goes beyond visual identity.

My work addresses fundamental questions:

  • What does this place stand for?

  • What makes it distinctive?

  • Who is it relevant to?

  • How should it position itself?

  • What narrative can it build around that positioning?

  • How can it turn that strategy into visitor interest, investment, talent attraction, events, and a stronger reputation?

Areas of Expertise

I develop and support projects focused on:

  • Place branding and positioning

  • Destination strategy

  • Place marketing

  • Narratives for cities, regions, and destinations

  • Positioning places to attract visitors, investment, and talent

  • Strategies for promotion agencies

  • Workshops and stakeholder alignment

  • AI for destination strategy and place marketing

My work spans research and assessment, positioning and narrative development, and practical recommendations for bringing these strategies to life.

Who is Leonardo Nieto

CONFERENCIA_edited.jpg

I am a communications professional with a master’s degree in Tourism and a career spanning strategic communications, economic development, tourism, investment, and place branding.

I have worked with cities, regions, promotion agencies, institutions, and businesses on projects focused on positioning, regional development, tourism, investment, and communications.

My experience combines on-the-ground work, strategic consulting, research, content development, and public speaking.

This experience has shaped how I understand places: beyond their geography, they are interconnected systems competing for attention, reputation, visitors, investment, talent, and opportunities.

In recent years, I have also integrated artificial intelligence into my work to support research, place-based analysis, benchmarking, scenario planning, and the development of place marketing strategies.

A Globally Connected Perspective

Place branding grows stronger through diverse perspectives. That is why I stay connected and collaborate with professionals, organizations, and networks specializing in place branding, place marketing, tourism, and destination positioning.

These include:

  • Place Branders: A think tank focused on place branding, research, and strategic thinking about places.

  • NationMark: Specialists in origin-based products, place identity, and positioning strategies.

  • REIBE: The Ibero-American Experiences Network brings together professionals from across Ibero-America to explore cities and regions from a public-sector perspective.

These connections bring international perspectives, methodologies, and practical experience to the projects I work on.
